JSI congratulates Japanese immunologist Tasuku Honjo (JSI Honorary Member) and American immunologist James P. Allison on being awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.
Dr. Honjo discovered a molecule PD-1, which has the immune regulatory function and has conducted the pioneering research leading to novel approaches of cancer treatment.
Dr. Honjo is the 26th Japanese Nobel laureate following Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi (2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; Tokyo Institute of Technology) and the 5th Japanese winner of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
