


Shimon Sakaguchi, Specially Appointed Professor at the WPI Immunology Frontier Research Center, The University of Osaka, and a Distinguished Member of the Japanese Society for Immunology, has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, jointly with Dr. Mary E. Brunkow and Dr. Fred Ramsdell.
The prize was awarded “for the discovery of peripheral immune tolerance.” Prof. Sakaguchi discovered regulatory T cells (Tregs), which play a crucial role in suppressing immune responses, and elucidated their functions and significance, making outstanding contributions to advancing research in autoimmune diseases, cancer, and transplant immunology.
The Japanese Society for Immunology extends its heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Sakaguchi and expresses its deep respect for his outstanding scientific achievements and long-standing contributions to the field of immunology.
